The UK ‘struck gold’ in the desert at WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017 (known as the ‘skills Olympics’). BBC Breakfast joined the jubilant celebrations, as Team UK came 10th in the World medals tables among 77 nations.
BBC economics correspondent, Steph McGovern, worked alongside Kirkby Monahan’s video production team to follow the competitors progress and capture the moment they discovered who secured their place on the podium.
Among the medallists were a beauty therapist, cabinetmaker, plumber, stonemason, visual merchandiser, car painter and an auto repairer.
Kaiya Swain, aged 22, from Stone Cross, in East Sussex, was voted the World’s best young beauty therapist.
Kaiya, who works at Kaiya Rose Beauty in Pevensey, said: “It was an absolute honour to represent my country. This is a dream come true, I never expected to come out on top.”
Team UK has triumphed picking up no less than 20 medals, 1 gold, 3 silvers, 3 bronze and 13 medallions of excellence at a spectacular closing ceremony in front of 15,000 people and the World’s media at the ad Du Arena.
Winning silver were: Stonemason, Archie Stoke-Faiers, Car Painter Daryl Head and Visual Merchandiser Catherine Abbott.
Winning bronze were: Plumber Dan Martins, Cabinet Maker Angus Bruce-Gardener and Autobody Repairer Andrew Gault.
During the Team’s stay in Abu Dhabi, they were gifted the unique opportunity to visit a local school with the aim of inspiring future generations to consider the world of skilled work. Kirkby Monahan Publicity were on hand to capture all 34 members being warmly welcomed by a buoyant group of of local school children.
Team UK’s date in the desert came on the eve of competition. Select members were whisked into the setting sun to get a taste of desert life and experience the rolling sand dunes of the United Arab Emirates.
The production team were on hand to capture footage of these memorable moments, which were later used on BBC Breakfast and BBC 1 O’clock News.
